So adamson
February 7th, 2009 posted by jerzexako under Uncategorized. [ Comments: 1 ]

So Adamson, So Stupid

pag-katapos ng Talk, normal na mag-tanong ang mga um-attend ng kanilang mga saloobin sa speaker, hindi ko alam kung paano sasabihin ito nang hindi nakaka-insulto sa nag-tanong pero may nag-tanong mula sa University of Adamson (hindi ko alam kung estudyante siya o guro, pero sana hindi siya seminarista) nang ganito: “eh so much been said, so what is the point? its same rhetoric story but where do we go from here? we’ve had enough and we are so fed of the same liberation theory, where do we go from here?”

May the lord grant them real WISDOM

Defrosted memories
September 17th, 2008 posted by adventurera under Uncategorized. [ Comments: 4 ]

Pero realizing that, I started knowing myself.

Hi
September 11th, 2008 posted by AJ007 under Uncategorized. [ Comments: 1 ]

I would like to start with thanking Mr. Joebert Lazarte for inviting me here, this is such a well thought of site to exchange “well argued” posts.

Then I would like to say hi to everyone here.

Our UAAP basketball performance hasn’t change that much. We only acquire a good player from time to time to which the whole team can  lean on, but the actual chemistry or play isn’t there at all. Ball passing is bad, field goals are not at all counting, three point shootings are unpredictable,  defense is weak, offense is equally weak. But Canada and Alvares are good players, Canada could out dribble La Salle’s JV Casio. There’s future for our team next year if…

BIODIESEL caused some heated argument in the senate back then. The argument unfairly capitalized on food production against biodiesel proliferation. So the 3% biodiesel addition to the petroleum fuel pumped by oil companies is now a law but, for some reason the idea just vanished in the thin air. I know part of the reason, particularly the scienttific basis and some politics but for those of you who are interested might as well ask so I can give you specific answers.

I’m glad Adamson community is supporting Lozada, or if not at all, at least we are interested with the ZTE issue.

Status of the blog: September 2008
September 10th, 2008 posted by JB under From The Admin, Uncategorized. [ Comments: 5 ]

First, thanks to a buddy who helpfully watched over this site and “observed” its weaknesses in the past couple of weeks I had been away. So now we’re making the following changes that will hopefully improve it:

  • The Forum will be removed to direct more focus on the blog. Anything that can be discussed shall be discussed on the front blog end.
  • Comments are no longer possible if you’re not a Registered Member and logged in. This will avoid anonymous impostors from leaving nasty irresponsible commentary. On the upside, this will also instill a better sense of responsibility among commenters. And hopefully, they will be nicer to one another.
  • I have received about half a dozen supposedly “paid” blog posts, but I had to decline them all for a range of reasons, from quality to wrong choice of topic. So if you haven’t tried writing something that can earn you some money, please do so by first reading carefully this laundry list of requirements and email your submissions to me.
  • My supposed on-site promotion of this blog right within the university has been delayed several times because of a variety of unexpected work-related stuff. The said promotion involves pretty girls handing out flyers and other promotional paraphernalia to students. I already have the pretty girls, but we have yet to sit down and work on the “promotional paraphernalia.” But I will table this for now and maybe the next best schedule would be at the start of next year.
  • And again, if you’re an Adamsonian and you maintain your own blog/website, feel free to contact me so I can add you to our links.

So that’s it. Not much but probably enough to keep us rolling. Thanks also to a bunch of regular contributors, mostly former and current Adamson Chronicle writers and editors, and student leaders, for keeping things interesting and intellectual on this site. Keep the discussions coming. Whatever direction Adamsonian.com may take in the future, you have already made a great contribution to it.

Campus hypnosis and shiny corporate giftwraps
September 6th, 2008 posted by stiban_graffiti under Uncategorized. [ Comments: 14 ]

I had a YM conversation with my former EIC two nights ago. The simple hello greeting ignited into a short discussion over homosexuality and how I considered it as a physical disease. At first, she was refusing to entertain my questions about the said topic and she explained that we were no longer in the student publication anymore to talk about serious things. But I still managed to force her to just get along with my midnight mental convulsion even for a few questions. After that, she just advised me to write a post about my views on homosexuality and on our detoriating sense of morality. But I refused coz it is just an ‘advise’ even if she was Ms. Celia. Also, I don’t have the urge to write about such stuff.
Homosexuality is not the topic of my post here. That conversation with that TAC alumna brought something back to my thoughs about my student publication years. I remembered the years when I saw myself with a bunch of literary hooligans enjoying freedom inside the pub. We got no advisers from the admin before and as far as I can remember, TAC never had one ever since it was born some eons ago.
We enjoyed freedom for our pens. We had campus press freedom. We weren’t required to bow to a professor. We were college students already. We were not in a high school pub. We were old enough to know what has to be done. We were not kids anymore or ‘bata’ as some individual might think. I hate hearing that authoritative word ‘bata’ being referred to an adult - especially to college writers.
As far I know, I have only three local definitions of the word ‘bata’. First, it is used to refer to a small kid from age 1 to 11. “Ang daming batang naglalaro sa playground oh. Ung isa wala pang salawal.Ung isa iyakin.” Second, ‘bata’ is used to refer to someone’s girlfriend or boyfriend. We usually hear “Pre, bata mo ba yan? Me bata ka na ah.” Third, it is used to refer to a mobster’s goons or to a cop’s men to imply authority over them. I usually hear villains like Paquito Diaz saying “Maghanda ka na, paparating na ang mga bata ko!” What I am just trying to tell is that college students are grown ups already. If we will not treat them as grown ups, eh kelan pa? Perhaps they are even more matured compared to some professors because I strongly believe that ‘maturity’ is not entirely and solely dependent on the age of an individual. Rather, maturity should be based on experience and lessons gained. Age is just like an empty canister. Some old men got big canisters but are only half-filled. Some young individuals got their small canisters filled already up to its rim. Nice analogy. Ehem. Even if you are in your 60s, you can still be an immature because of your stupidity and stubbornness. You just got older, not wiser.
Our misconception about maturity can lead us away from our noble goals of guiding the young generation. If we will always watch what they are doing and forcing them to rigidly follow our commands, we are unconsiously treating them like prisoners. If we also authoritatively enforce to them our principles, beliefs, judgements, and morals and we asked them to kneel over it, then what kind of education or guidance are we giving to these college students? We are not educating them. We are hypnotizing them. We are training them to be dependent of us. We are training them to be dependent of our ‘light’ and not to make their own lights.
We are also turning them into a tasty but lifeless stuffed chicken with no self identity. This misconception of misled education is the plague that has been swallowing our education system. There is no more liberty and academic freedom in campuses for students to grow and learn in their own ways. If we say that they have to be guided, we must not forget that there is a very thin line that separates guidance and imposition. Imposition is the death of education.
That’s why most college students after they have left their universities to embrace the f_ck me-f_ck you-f_ck him-f_ck her-f_ck youself-f_ck everyone-outside world, they are as flat as their diplomas. Most colleges and universities can only produce ‘learned’ graduates and not ‘educated’ ones. And based on what I have observed in my professional life, these fresh graduates who have successfully entered the workforce are still under the effect of ‘college hypnosis’.  Of course, they were trained to be competent to their chosen professions but as individuals or as human beings – they lack the necessary traits and virtues that will protect them from the pangs and claws of the real world. Trigonomentry cannot defend your right as a Filipino. Your scientific calculator cannot help you solve the complexities of your co-employees’s animalistic behaviors nor your 1s as an academician can be used to spear through the dilemmas of our motherland.
Education and compentence should not be based solely on academic grades. That’s why I am really disgusted about the Admin’s No-Failing-Grade policy being imposed to all students who want to serve their fellow Adamsonians thru entering the student government. If someone got a failed mark in his Calculus, it should not hinder him of his ambition to serve and to be a leader. Having a failed mark doesn’t ‘ultimately’ mean that a certain student is irresponsible or lazy or an idiot. Goddamnit! I am really bewildered why it is more difficult to run as an AUSG president than to run as a president of this god-f_cked country. Can someone explain and give me the logical justification (if there’s any) of this stinking stupidity by OSA?
That policy is a clear and malignant violation of your student rights. Honestly, I know the arcane reasons why they came up with that filtering scheme. They want to be assured that those who will be qualified to run will only be from their cesspool of ‘learned’ students and not from the very few ‘educated’ ones.
I just hope that they have not yet fully imposed it to the student publication (or am I late already?). For me, it is right to use the academic performance of a campus writer as a factor for his qualification to stay in the pub. If he is getting too serious about his duty as a writer and he neglects his academics, it is the obligation of the editorial board to give necessary disciplinary actions to their staff – not necessarily to terminate them. That’s why being in the editorial board doesn’t only require writing and editing skills, one must also have the trait of a leader. But again, the No-Failing-Grade policy is a no-no for me. It is just like using a jungle bolo to ruthlessly slash the neck of someone who got a simple migraine. Anyway, why are we so concerned about academic grades? Ah, I almost forgot! It is mainly because of the dreaded campus hypnosis. Silly me. If this is the type of education that we are getting and paying for, I can say that we are going nowhere. How can we say that we are educated?
We have politicians who got their ‘education’ from prestiguous universities, some even went to Harvard and Yale. We are blessed and cursed with ‘educated’ public officials. And yet, after the long span of decades tainted with rallies and anxieties, these breed of government mutts did nothing to alleviate our race from its pigsty of miseries. These big time crooks are definitely the product of our benevolent education system.
But they are the nadir of our education system’s failure. For your level, I can surely expect a newly-hired graduate to easily solve a math problem or enumerate the countries of the world with its capitals but I am doubtful if he can protect his rights as a person or defend himself when he is forced to. It is because of the fact that our rotten ‘education’ system is based on ‘yes sir-yes mam’ method of teaching. We were absolutely trained to follow instructions and commands with a high level of competence. We were trained to be Class A corporate slaves. We were trained to serve multinational companies and not our society and fellow men.
Sad to say, after your graduation, you will be suddenly spanked in the face with the realization that you are not yet ready and the things that you have learned from our learning institutions are just SUPERFICIAL. Apparent but unreal. Shiny giftwraps, empty carton boxes.
We know how to walk  but we don’t  know how to stand.
(Imagine I used a straight face emoticon instead of a period to end this post.)

Cat poop really stink
September 3rd, 2008 posted by tikgirl under Uncategorized. [ Comments: 6 ]

“[We] are moving away from excellence rather than moving towards it”, as quoted from a professor as few interviews were conducted here in Adamson University about the screening and expulsion of teachers who can’t really teach and who “doesn’t really teach” even if they already have their master’s or doctor’s degrees.

What constitutes a good and effective professor? If they are the ‘educators’, then the students are the ‘learners’? If so, what separates the ‘two’ from colliding with each other and defining their roles in the institution?

Is there really such a thing as an ‘incompetent’ professor? According to one of the professors’, “There’s no such thing”. He said that even if there is ‘such’ a teacher maybe because he or she has very little experience, knowledge and understanding about the subject matter. And yes, teaching techniques do matter. If a certain professor doesn’t know his or her given subject matter that much, he or she is incompetent in teaching this, for the simple reason that this is not his or her specialization. He or she is incompetent in that kind of subject but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he or she is incompetent in the whole of teaching. It all depends on the “objective capacity” of the students, as well as their colleagues, to conclude that one is “incompetent”. People differ in their understanding about things in general. That’s what separates us from others: our capacity to have our own objective thinking. But that should not make us be judgmental about a certain person or his abilities, and in this case, the teaching methods of a certain professor. It all bears down to the interests that the students (as well as their professors) cater to. Nobody can be a “jack of all trades”; lest he or she is a superhero who can do several things simultaneously. Besides, who would even brand a teacher, ‘incompetent’? The students? If so, “what is their objective capacity to evaluate”? “That’s why they [the professors] have finished their degree/s because they know what they are doing”.

In reality, we are the students; they are the professors. We go to them to learn new things, and that includes the things that are not even in the curriculum. They also serve as “professors of life”, who give us a small lectures about real life every so often. They reach for us to share their knowledge. Some students would not understand this symbiotic relationship while others do. It is not about being self-righteous on the part of this editorial or on the part of the professors, but as a student, how can you say that this certain professor is indeed :incompetent” in your standards if you yourself haven’t graduated yet in college? As a professor, how can you judge your so-called colleague that he or she is incompetent if you yourself know that people have different perspectives and different specializations?

If we would screen the professors to “pick out” the incompetent ones (like it’s a disease or something), what do we want to prove? That these “handpicked” professors are not viable to teach? How can that contend to the specialization/s that they offer? There are varying teaching methods, and as professors, they absolutely know what they are doing. We do believe that there are no incompetent professors; and we do believe that there are no incompetent students either. There is just this incompetent understanding and behavior between the two groups. Whether we admit it or not, there is this idealism that clashes between a professor and his/her students, therefore creating this kind of crumbling relationship between the two. Tolerance is one big heap of admonishing the breath of cognitive thinking. Hate and biases crumble down this tolerance, crushing the “utopia” of learning and teaching.

So, what then is a professor? If he or she is a person who professes to be an expert and has a degree in a field of study, then the reasons behind their screening and expulsions are indeed subjective and is backed up with viable cases and the students are the just the mere products of the imparted knowledge given by a teacher. Thus, no one can take away the being of a professor because it will stay with them and they will continue to spread their wisdom even at times they undergo criticisms and unruly accusations from “students”.

As students, we can’t be rebels all the time. As Jesse Delia has proposed in his Constructivism Theory, conflicts all depend on our self-constructed realities. Professors, as diverse as they are, have their own constructed realities, too. If we would try to break out of this, and to throw away our prejudices, and try to disseminate equal respect for both the professor and his or her teaching methods and to try to understand them as they also try to understand us, incompetence would be ruled out of the question. “I think; therefore I am”, as Rene Descartes put it.

* Interviewees were not named because of the sensitivity of the topic. However, feel free to ask the writers about the stance of this.

* thanks to my partner for this paper, Conrad. we made it!

Globe API now open to developers
August 24th, 2008 posted by jctronix under Uncategorized. [ Comments: none ]

August 7, 2008: The Isla ballroom of the EDSA Shangri-la Hotel was filled with software developers and engineers to join Globe telecom, Inc. and its technological partners in launching of Globe Labs. The convention featured the formal openning of the Globe SMS/MMS API (application programming interface) to the opensource trend providing developers the capacity to program mobile based application that uses SMS/MMS without the dilemma of hardware interfacing. Now, instead of using your GSM module or your handset togeher with the physical coupling and the AT commands that it demands, you only need a few commands and parameters embedded on your source code to send SMS/MMS or even to receive SMS and utilize its coding as a control command for your software application.

However, It is only offered to the developers who are to join the Globe Labs Challenge. (For more information about the Globe Labs Challenge please visit www.globelabs.com.ph)

After the application demo of PinoyJUG and PhRUG where they have presented how we can use the Globe API to control online applications, the Globe Labs technological partners introduced their development tools for mobile applications - Netbeans for Sun microsystems, Microsoft studio mobile tools SDK for microsoft, Adobe flash lite and Adobe Device Central for Adobe and the use of widget for forum.nokia. They have also provided demonstrations on how easy it is to shift into the mobile application development using these softwares.

The event were enjoyed by participants from Adamson University IT, Compsci and ECE society.
